Growing Peach Trees

A Quick Guide to Growing Peach Trees

One of the best ways to have fresh peaches every year is to try growing peach trees of your own. Peach trees are not hard to grow, but they require quite warm temperatures. If you live in a relatively warm climate like southern and western sections of the United States, it is not hard to grow your own peaches and other fruit. They do take some work and patience, however, as fruit trees do tend to have more diseases than other types of trees. It may be necessary to spray them to get rid of insects and diseases.

The first step in growing peach trees is to obtain the trees. All peach trees are grown from seed, but most people try for fruit production a couple years sooner than normal by buying and planting nursery seedlings instead of seeds. With seedlings, it is possible to have your first fruit in a couple of years.

The best place in your yard for growing peach trees are spots that will get full sunlight. Peach trees like lots of compost added to the soil. If your fruit tree is in a peat pot, you can plant the tree, pot and all, although many people like to cut the pot open a bit. If the peach tree is in an ordinary plastic pot, you will need to take it out of the pot and put the root ball directly in the hole you have dug. Some nurseries cover the roots with a burlap bag, and this would also need to be removed. Most trees have roots that require a hole of a couple feet deep. Replace the soil and water the newly planted peach tree thoroughly.

Growing peach trees requires that you stake the tree, especially for the first year. This will protect it from rain and storm damage until it has been given a chance to spread its roots into the soil for support. You can also apply a peach-specific fertilizer to the soil to increase the likelihood of quicker growth.

If you wish to have healthy trees that produce the most possible fruit, you will need to prune your peach trees every year. The best time is in the early spring before tree growth for the new year has begun. Get rid of any damaged or diseased branches and limbs, and make space inside the tree so that air and sunlight can circulated. Pruning for shape also helps to make your peach trees look nicer.

Growing fruit is an iffy proposition each year as you never know what kind of weather you will have. The number of peaches is dependent on the amount of blooms and the size of the fruit depends on how many peaches the tree is producing. You can have many smaller peaches or fewer large peaches. During the first few years, don’t count on the tree to produce peaches prolifically. But once it has sufficient size and the right weather, peaches should be numerous.

One of the tribulations of growing fruit trees is that they are in danger from many different insects and diseases. Some attack the tree and some attack the fruit. It will probably be necessary to spray your trees if you want to obtain the best possible fruit. This will need to be done before the trees bud in the spring and during the season depending on what sort of insect and disease threats are at hand. Always make sure to follow the directions on the spray product labels.

With some persistence and good weather, you will be enjoying home-grown peaches before you know it.
